Orange Pill

What Is The Orange Pill?

What Is The Orange Pill?

The orange pill is used as a metaphor for waking up to the truth about bitcoin and fiat money. It is a reference to the scene in the film, The Matrix when Morpheus offers Neo 2 pills. To take the orange pill means that you wake up to the reality that we are all slaves to a fiat system that is controlled by a ruling class that owns and operates every aspect of our daily lives.

It has also become a verb which means that you show someone the truth about fiat money, Bitcoin, and convince someone to begin their journey down the Bitcoin rabbit hole by stacking their first sats.

Where Did Orange Pill Come From?

In the Bitcoin community, the orange pill is a reference to the scene in The Matrix when Morpheus explains the matrix to Neo. He explains that it’s all a lie and that everyone in the matrix is a slave. Next, Morpheus offers Neo the choice to take one of two pills; a red pill and a blue pill.

The blue pill is blissful ignorance and if Neo takes it, he wakes up back in his apartment and believes whatever he wants. If Neo takes the red pill, Morpheus shows him the truth about the matrix and “how deep the rabbit hole goes”. Bitcoiners have adopted this and meme’d it but the red pill has been removed and an orange Bitcoin pill has taken its place.

Taking The Orange Pill

In the same way that Neo takes the red pill to see the world as it really is, taking the orange pill means seeing Bitcoin for what it really is: a way to opt out of the traditional financial system and achieve true financial sovereignty.

What Does Orange Pill Mean?

Taking the orange pill or getting orange pilled means different things to different people but the commonality amongst many bitcoiners is that someone has begun to learn about bitcoin and “how deep the rabbit hole goes” just like when Morpheus offers Neo the choice between 2 pills.

Taking the orange pill is making a choice between blissful ignorance about the world as it is vs. a desire to learn more about a new system that is open, honest, and works for everyone.

It is the beginning of a personal journey that will be different for everyone. For some, bitcoin is about saving for a house at a time when home ownership is becoming more difficult. For others, bitcoin may be about sending money across borders to friends and family in developing nations. For many, it means that you understand every dollar (or any unit of fiat currency) that gets printed reduces the amount that you have in relation to the total.

Getting your friends and family to take bitcoin seriously can be a difficult task. This is especially true for those who live in developed nations with relatively strong fiat currencies. For the rest of the world who doesn’t have the luxury or privilege of a strong national currency, bitcoin is an obvious choice for them.
