What Is Doxxic Change?

What Is Doxxic Change?

Doxxic change, or doxic change, is the remaining “odd” UTXO that is linked to pre-mix UTXOs after a Whirlpool Tx0 transaction. You should never mix your doxxic change with any post-mix outputs. This will cancel the privacy benefits of CoinJoin. Since CoinJoin transactions use inputs and outputs that are all the same amount, the doxxic change is the “odd” amount that is not the same amount as all of the mixed UTXOs.

Doxxing + Bitcoin Change

The term doxxic change is a conjoining of the words toxic and doxx. The term “doxxing” originates from journalists’ shorthand for retrieving documentary evidence: “dropping” (the release of) “docs” (documents) and it is the intentional exposure of someone’s personally identifiable information (PII), usually without their permission or knowledge. Doxxing can be done for various reasons, including to shame, blackmail, or intimidate the individual; to damage their reputation or employment prospects; to coerce them into some kind of action; or simply to cause them emotional distress. The term “doxxing” comes from the word “docs,” short for “documents,” as in “digging up dirt on someone.”

Doxxing can have serious consequences for the victim, including job loss, public humiliation, and even physical threats. Your bitcoin change can also be doxxing you if you’re not careful.

Since the Bitcoin blockchain is completely public and auditable by anyone in the world, when you send bitcoin, you are almost certainly broadcasting a certain amount of meta data to the world. Some of this metadata may provide valuable information about your or your bitcoin holdings. In order to reduce the amount of this toxic metadata, it is best practice to use one of the many CoinJoin implementations and not mix your doxxic change with any of your post mix UTXOs. One of the easiest ways to avoid accidentally merging mixed UTXOs with your doxxic change is to label each and every one of your UTXOs within your wallet use coin control to manually select post mix UTXOs when you send transactions.
